Why Longer Primary Tubes Make More Power
Headers work by using exhaust pulse scavenging — as one cylinder's exhaust pulse moves down its primary tube, it creates a low-pressure wave that helps pull exhaust gas out of the next cylinder in the firing order. Longer primary tubes tune this scavenging effect to work more effectively at lower RPM, broadening the torque curve, while the increased diameter and smoother path (versus restrictive factory manifolds) reduce backpressure at higher RPM. The net result is a meaningful gain across a wide RPM range rather than just a peak-power number.
Long Tube vs. Shorty Headers
Shorty headers are a popular middle-ground upgrade because they're easier to install — often without disconnecting motor mounts or dealing with steering shaft clearance — but they give up a fair amount of the exhaust scavenging benefit that comes from longer primaries. For naturally aspirated builds especially, long tube headers are one of the highest-value power upgrades available — they wake up the midrange, improve top-end breathing, and usually come with a more aggressive exhaust note as a bonus.
