Camshaft Overlap Explained: How It Shapes Your Engine's Powerband
Duration and lift get most of the attention when people talk about camshafts, but overlap is arguably the spec that most defines how a cam actually feels to drive. Here's what it is and why it matters so much.
What Overlap Actually Is
Overlap is the brief period during the exhaust stroke when both the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time — the exhaust valve hasn't fully closed yet while the intake valve is just starting to open. This window lets fresh intake charge help "scavenge" leftover exhaust gas out of the cylinder, and it's controlled by how the cam's lobe centerlines are ground relative to each other.
More Overlap: Big Power, Rougher Manners
Increasing overlap generally improves high-RPM cylinder filling and can add real power up top, which is why aggressive naturally aspirated cams often use a lot of it. The tradeoff shows up at idle and low RPM: more overlap means some exhaust gas can get pulled back into the intake at low speeds, which drops idle vacuum, gives that lopey, rough idle sound enthusiasts love, and can hurt low-end torque and fuel economy.
Why Boosted Applications Usually Want Less
Under boost, the exhaust side of the engine is already under more backpressure, and positive pressure in the intake manifold makes overlap work against you — instead of scavenging exhaust gas, you risk blowing fresh intake charge (and boost) straight out the exhaust valve during the overlap window. This is why cams designed for forced induction, like many of Brian Tooley Racing's boost-specific grinds, intentionally use less overlap than a comparable naturally aspirated cam. Less overlap keeps cylinder pressure under control and reduces reversion, even though it sacrifices some of the top-end gains a big-overlap N/A cam would offer.
Overlap and Vacuum-Based Accessories
If your car relies on manifold vacuum for brake boosters or other accessories, a high-overlap cam can make those systems less reliable at idle since vacuum drops. This is a practical, often-overlooked reason daily-driven cars usually stick to more moderate overlap specs even when the owner wants an aggressive sound.
