Whipple vs Vortech vs ProCharger: Which Supercharger Is Right for Your Mustang GT?
Ask ten Mustang guys which supercharger to buy and you'll get ten answers, four arguments and at least one guy telling you to just turbo it instead. We've been building boosted Coyotes here in Fayetteville for over a decade, and the honest truth is that there is no single best supercharger for a Mustang GT — there's a best supercharger for how you drive your Mustang.
So instead of picking a winner, let's break down what actually separates these three, what each one does well, and how to figure out which one belongs in your engine bay.
First: forget the brands for a second
Before you compare Whipple to ProCharger to Vortech, you have to understand the fork in the road. Every supercharger decision comes down to one question:
Do you want boost right now, or boost that builds?
Twin-screw (Whipple) — positive displacement
A twin-screw blower bolts on top of the motor and replaces your intake manifold. It's a positive-displacement pump with internal compression, which means it moves a fixed amount of air per revolution. Translation: it's making near-full boost by about 2,500 RPM and holds it flat to redline.
Roll into the throttle at 2,000 RPM in third gear and the car just leaves. It feels like somebody swapped in a 7.0-liter motor. That instant, everywhere torque is the whole reason people love twin-screws.
Centrifugal (ProCharger and Vortech)
A centrifugal blower mounts low on the front of the motor and looks and acts like a belt-driven turbo. Boost is a function of impeller speed, and impeller speed climbs with engine RPM — so boost builds as the tach climbs and peaks at redline.
Down low it drives almost exactly like a stock GT. Up top it pulls harder and harder and doesn't quit. It's a progressive, linear power delivery that's very easy to modulate.
Neither is "better." A twin-screw at 12 psi and a centrifugal at 12 psi can dyno within a few horsepower of each other at peak — while the twin-screw has 100+ lb-ft more at 3,000 RPM and the centrifugal has a car you can actually drive in the rain.
Whipple: the torque monster
Whipple is the kit we sell and install the most, and there's a reason for that.
What you get: A Gen 6 3.0L twin-screw sitting under the stock hood with an integrated air-to-water intercooler, front-mount heat exchanger, pump and reservoir. Stage 1 and Stage 2 kits are available for every Coyote GT from 2011 all the way through the 2024+ S650, with Stage 2 adding a bigger throttle body, bigger inlet, a smaller pulley and a revised calibration.
Real-world power on 93 octane, stock long block:
- 2011–2014 S197: roughly 640–680 RWHP on a Stage 2
- 2015–2023 S550: roughly 550–580 RWHP Stage 1, 630–680 RWHP Stage 2
- 2024+ S650: roughly 700–720 RWHP Stage 1, 750–780 RWHP Stage 2 with headers and a good custom tune
Quick note on numbers, because this trips people up constantly: Whipple advertises flywheel horsepower. When you see "875 HP" on a Stage 2 S650 kit, that's at the crank. Knock 12–15% off for what the dyno will actually show at the tires. We're not knocking Whipple for it — most manufacturers do it — but we'd rather you hear it from us than be disappointed on dyno day.
Where Whipple wins: Street torque. Roll racing. Any car where you want it to feel violent from 2,500 RPM. It's also the only one of the three with a current CARB Executive Order on every Mustang GT generation from 2011 through 2026, including the S650 — which matters if you ever move somewhere with real emissions testing, or ever want to sell the car to somebody who does. Air-to-water intercooling also means it doesn't care whether you're moving; it'll make the same power sitting in the staging lanes as it does at 80 mph.
Where it's a compromise: It's the tightest fit. On 2018+ S550 cars the hood liner comes out, and some cars need adjustable motor mounts to drop the engine a hair for clearance. It's the longest install of the three — roughly 11 hours of book time versus 7-8 for the others. You'll hear rotor whine at cruise, not just at wide open throttle. And the low-RPM torque is a genuine traction problem: expect first gear to be mostly decorative on a street tire.
We put a Whipple Stage 2 on Josh's 2025 GT and it made 901 RWHP on a stock short block and stock transmission with a smaller pulley and E85. That's close to the ceiling of what this platform will do without opening the motor. At this point the margin of error is extremely small and the ole saying “its not if, but when”.

ProCharger: the top-end pull
ProCharger is the centrifugal most people picture when they think "blown Mustang" — that unmistakable gear whine that gets louder the harder you push.
What you get: A P-1SC-1 or P-1X head unit mounted low on the passenger side, a big air-to-air intercooler up front, and a self-contained oiling system. ProCharger reorganized their Mustang lineup in 2025 into Stage 1 / Stage 2 / Stage 3, with Stage 3 adding an 8-rib drive for cars pushing serious boost.
Real-world power on 93 octane, stock long block:
- 2011–2014: roughly 510–540 RWHP on the HO system
- 2015–2023: roughly 525–580 RWHP Stage 1, 620–680 RWHP with a smaller pulley and a good custom tune
- 2024+ S650: roughly 660–720 RWHP on Stage 1/Stage 2 calibrations
Same disclaimer, different flavor: ProCharger publishes gains, not totals. "330+ HP gain" is not the same thing as 330 RWHP, and it's not a finished number.
Where ProCharger wins: Head unit upgradeability is the real story. You start on a P-1X and, when you're ready, the same kit takes a D-1X, an F-1A, an F-1R — all the way to genuine four-digit power without buying a whole new system. That upgrade path is the single strongest argument for going centrifugal. The self-contained oiling means no drilling your oil pan and no return line, the install is meaningfully simpler, and the front-mount air-to-air core is very hard to heat soak on repeated pulls at speed. The linear power curve is also just easier to drive fast — it's the one we'd pick for a road course or an autocross car.
Where it's a compromise: You give up the bottom end. Below 3,000 RPM a ProCharged GT drives like a stock GT, which some guys love and some guys find boring. The blower oil needs changing every 6,000 miles or so — a real, recurring maintenance item. Air-to-air intercooling does soak sitting in traffic on a hot Carolina afternoon. And on the S650, ProCharger does not currently have a CARB EO.
Vortech: the value play
Vortech gets overlooked, and we think that's a mistake — especially if you're building a car in stages.
What you get: A V-3 JT-Trim (or V-3 Si on the 2011–2014 cars) with self-contained oiling and a big air-to-air charge cooler. Complete systems come with high-flow injectors, a voltage booster and a calibration; tuner kits are hardware only.
Real-world power on 93 octane, stock long block:
- 2011–2014: roughly 510–530 RWHP on the complete V-3 Si system
- 2015–2023: roughly 580–600 RWHP out of the box on the V-3 JT, and we've seen well-supported V-3 cars in the 800s on E85 with headers, a ported manifold and a real fuel system
- 2024+ S650: tuner kit only — no injectors, no pump, no tune included
Where Vortech wins: Price. A Vortech kit is consistently the least expensive way to get boost on a Coyote, and the head unit is not the limiting factor — you can upgrade to a V-7 JT-B or a YSi later and support 1,200+ HP on the same kit. Self-contained oiling and low mounting make it a clean install. If your plan is "get boosted now, build the rest of the car over the next two years," Vortech is a very smart entry point.
Where it's a compromise: The complete-system packages aren't as comprehensive as Whipple's or ProCharger's, and the S650 offering is tuner-only right now — meaning you are responsible for the fuel system and the tune, which is not a beginner's project. It also has the smallest aftermarket support ecosystem of the three.

What it actually costs
Kit price is not the number that matters. Installed and tuned is the number that matters, and for a Mustang GT you should budget roughly:
- Kit: $7,500 – $10,000 depending on brand and stage
- Installation: 7–11 hours of labor
- Custom tuning: we tune in-house on our Dynojet — see our tuning and dyno services
- Supporting mods: $1,500 – $4,000+ depending on your power target
All in, most customers land somewhere in the $11,000 – $15,000 range for a complete, tuned, drive-it-home build. The stuff nobody tells you about until it breaks
Whichever blower you pick, the supercharger is not the expensive part of a supercharger build. These are the things that decide whether your car is reliable at 700 RWHP or a project that lives on a lift:
Tuning. This is not optional and it is not the place to save money. A canned tune will get you driving; a proper custom tune on a dyno is what keeps the motor together and gets you the last 40-60 horsepower you paid for. We do Ford custom tuning in-house on HP Tuners, including S650.
Fuel. Every one of these platforms hits a fuel wall before it hits an engine wall. Injectors, and eventually a pump, are part of the build — not an upgrade for later. And E85 is worth about 10% on top of anything you make on 93.
The clutch, if you row your own. On an MT82 car the transmission is not the weak link — the clutch is. Every manual car we build over about 550 RWHP gets a twin-disc clutch. No exceptions.
Oil pump gears. The factory powdered-metal gear is a known Coyote weak point at sustained high RPM. Around 550-600 RWHP we start recommending a billet gear, and on a manual car that's going to see the rev limiter, we insist on it.
Where the stock motor gives up. Rough consensus, and it matches what we see: Gen 1 (2011–14) 600–650 RWHP, Gen 2 (2015–17) 650–700, Gen 3 (2018–23) 700–750. The 2024+ Gen 4 cars are clearly stronger — we've personally seen 901 to the tires on a stock short block — but the sample size is small and nobody knows the long-term answer yet. Above those numbers you're talking forged pistons and rods.

So which one should you buy?
Here's how we'd actually advise a customer standing in our shop:
Buy a Whipple if you want your Mustang to feel unhinged on the street from any RPM in any gear, you do a lot of roll racing, you want emissions-legal in all 50 states, and you're okay with a longer install and a car that will spin the tires whenever it feels like it. This is the choice for most street-driven GTs, which is why it's the one we sell most.
Buy a ProCharger if you're chasing a big number eventually, you want to start at 700 and grow into four digits on the same kit, you drive the car on a road course or autocross, or you just love the way a centrifugal builds and sounds. Also the right call if the idea of a blower under the hood liner bothers you.
Buy a Vortech if you want boost now on the tightest budget, you're building the car in stages, and you're comfortable sorting the fuel system and tune as part of the project rather than buying it in a box.
